freepdftranslator.com is a free online PDF translation tool. Upload a PDF in your browser, select a target language, and view the side-by-side translation in seconds. No signup, no payment, no watermark.
What we do
We translate the text content of PDF documents between more than 40 languages using a large language model. Unlike generic translators, this tool is tuned specifically for documents: headings, bold and italic styling, paragraph structure, and proper nouns are preserved. The result reads as if a careful translator wrote it, not a machine.
For scanned (image-based) PDFs, OCR (text recognition) runs directly in your browser via Tesseract.js, then the extracted text is translated. The PDF itself never leaves your device.
How it is built
- Frontend: Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS, deployed on Vercel.
- PDF rendering: PDF.js (Mozilla), running in your browser.
- OCR: Tesseract.js (WebAssembly), running in your browser.
- Translation: OpenAI gpt-4o-mini, called from a serverless function with strict rate limits and prompt-injection defenses.
- The source code is open. The translation prompt, rate-limit configuration, and all logic are visible to anyone inspecting the response.
Why is it free?
PDF translation is a tool people need occasionally and should not have to pay $20 per month for. Free use is capped at 15 pages per document and 50 MB per file so that the underlying API costs stay bounded. If a paid tier for larger documents is launched, this free version will remain free.
Privacy and security
Your PDFs are processed locally in your browser. Only the extracted plain text is sent to the translation API, and nothing is stored after the request completes. We do not use cookies, run ads, or track users. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
